a Make+Shift studios film

in association with Niko Onslaught

STATEMENT FROM THE DIRECTOR

I came across the story of the Roche family in my senior year of college, when my friend and schoolmate, Margaret Zayer, needed help setting up her display of pastel landscapes for a critique. Intrigued by one drawing, I asked her about it, and she began telling me about the tiny town in France where she had been inventing a new shade of blue with the last in a long line of dedicated, secretive, pastel makers. A few days later, I found her after the critique as she was taking down her landscapes, and proposed the idea of a documentary.

Now, finishing up the final stages of editing as Niko finishes the musical score: I'm suddenly realizing what I thought would be a nice 20-minute short piece that would be mostly interviews and mixing bowls is a feature-length documentary. There was just far, far too much to cover, and so much is going to have to be left out of the final piece. How could I possibly have crowdfunded a $6,000.00 feature film barely a year out of college? In theory, before I did it, it seemed easy. Now, having done it, it seems staggeringly impossible.

As I turn my energy to my next film---something meant to be feature-length and requiring a far larger budget---I feel like I must both thank and appeal to those who make what I do possible. Thank you to every one of you who ever gave anything to fund an indie film. We still need you, and we'll never stop working to make your donations worthwhile.
